Designing on a large-scale for Islington

With striking hoardings around Islington Town Hall, informing residents that the Assembly Hall is currently being restored.

The hoardings, which were designed by Dogstar, take influence from the time when the Assembly Hall played host to stars such as George Formby and Diana Dors. The Grade II listed art deco hall has been closed for almost three decades. It will be re-opened after its restoration in December 2009 and will be available as a venue for weddings, conferences and other community events. As well as telling residents what is going on behind the hoardings, the design incorporates a farmer's market sign and also asks residents for any memories that they may have from before the hall was closed.

Dawn Butler, Designer, Dogstar said: "Hoardings are a much over-looked medium for getting a message across loudly and clearly to a community. They are a great canvas for design and can really be taken advantage of, which is what we have tried to do in Islington. It was exciting designing on such a large scale, we wanted to give residents a taste of what the hall once was to the community, and what it will be again soon."
